Leading Marine Surveyors Acquired By BMT

11-Jan-2006

Vessel owners, operators and underwriters in North Western Europe are to be served by a new force in marine surveying and consultancy following the acquisition by BMT Ltd of Belgian-based Techmar International NV. Techmar International is the largest technical marine surveying company in Antwerp and the market leader in brown water surveying in Belgium.

The acquired company, to be renamed BMT Techmar NV, will be supported by the BMT group of companies and will enable BMT to further strengthen its surveying and consultancy offering in Antwerp, home to the second largest port in Europe, across Belgium and in other European countries such as France.

BMT Techmar will combine the technical surveying and consultancy expertise of Techmar International with that of BMT De Beer b.v., a subsidiary of BMT Ltd which specialises in nautical, cargo and technical surveying and has offices in Antwerp and Rotterdam. Historically the two companies have worked closely on a number of major projects.

The new company will enable BMT to offer a Belgium-based naval architecture service, with specialisations in brown and blue water fleet vessels. This will be utilised in complex salvage and warranty surveys and cases. BMT will also be able to provide a local liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas vessel surveying capability.

Carlos Maenhout, previous owner of Techmar International, has been appointed Managing Director of BMT Techmar.

Jeroen de Haas, Managing Director of BMT De Beer, comments: "Antwerp's port has recently experienced significant growth resulting in a dynamic, diverse and challenging surveying market. The establishment of the new company will strengthen BMT’s surveying and consultancy offering to this market and to others on mainland Europe."
