Materials Engineering

Structural IntegrityBMT Fleet Technology has capabilities that range from failure analysis, fitness-for-purpose assessment, mechanical testing and material characterization to fatigue and fracture analysis and structural integrity providing customers with impartial and independent technical support for their civil engineering projects. The Materials Technology Centre provides contract research and development, problem solving and engineering services to clients in the pipeline, marine, transportation, military, manufacturing and power generation industries.

Structural Reliability

This group considers structural behavior and failure to deliver damage tolerance analysis services.  They seek to answer fitness-for-service or engineering critical assessment (ECA) questions related to the ability of a damaged system to remain in service with or without operational restrictions, aggressive inspection or monitoring programs, or maintenance.  These questions are answered using commercially available or in-house research-based tools for finite element modelling, reliability and risk assessment, welding procedure simulation, fatigue and fracture assessment.

materials testingMaterials and Component Testing

Structural component and material behavior through mechanical testing and in-service structural monitoring are considered with the objective of defining the strength, toughness, fatigue, and corrosion characteristics of materials and components through physical trials.  Both standardized testing and research towards development of novel testing protocols or measurement devices are considered for a wide range of steel, aluminum, plastic, composite materials and structural components.

Welding and Fabrication Technology

This group supports welded construction by providing Welding Engineers and Technologists capable of answering welding metallurgy, weld strength/toughness and practical welding procedure or technique questions.  Our welding and fabrication shop is used to simulate welding conditions and develop welding procedures, evaluate welding equipment or consumables, and understand the implications of variations in welding parameters, conditions or equipment.

Hydrogen crackingMetallurgical Services Group

Materials Engineers and Metallurgists consider the implications of material chemistry, microstructure and processing to provide failure analysis, materials characterization and welding metallurgy services. Information from fracture surfaces, weld HAZ extent/hardness or penetration depths, weld hydrogen effusion/content measurement, chemical analyses are used to support welding and structural integrity research as well as to provide the basis for expert testimony for accident investigations.

On-site Laboratories and Test Facilities

BMT has a wide range of laboratories and test facilities to support its engineering service and research efforts.  These facilities are supplemented through agreements with other testing establishments and labs to cooperatively operate and maintain unique facilities to reduce duplication and increase utilization.
