Booms Engineered to Last, Customized for Every Job

Designed and engineered to last, our booms for safety, security, ice and debris control will meet your application's needs. Since 1990, BMT Fleet Technology has designed, fabricated and installed about 75 booms, totaling 15 km in length.  Our investment in research and development continues to grow.  BMT conducts on-going research into boom wear and failure in order to perfect the design and make booms last longer in the harshest of conditions.  Typically, no maintenance is required for the first five years.

Site Specific Design and Engineering

All BMT booms are designed and engineered for the specific conditions at the location where the boom will be installed. Historic weather data is used to predict wind, ice, current and debris loads. Every single component of the boom is engineered to resist all these loads.

Resistant to a Variety of Extreme Conditions

As well as being resistant to ice and debris, BMT booms have been designed to resist water level fluctuations and fast currents.

 Custom Design

BMT booms are specifically developed to meet the functionality and criteria unique to each application. Designs can be adapted to meet different objectives: safety, security, debris, and ice control - alone or in combination.

All-season Booms Focus on Efficiency

When the ice melts in the spring, there can be a long waiting period before it's safe to install a seasonal boom.  Our all-season booms eliminate the need for annual installation and removal thereby avoiding delays caused by unsafe spring conditions as well as the recurring cost of installing and uninstalling the boom.

Safety Booms

Safety booms provide a highly visible boundary that clearly warns boaters and recreational users to keep a safe distance. They can be deployed all year round or seasonally, depending on your needs.

Ice Booms

Ice buildup can cause costly interruptions and revenue losses. Ice booms help to form a stable ice cover upstream of hydro dams, reducing frazil ice pileup on the intakes saving the dam owners time and money by minimizing blockage. Ice booms can also be used for a variety of other applications including keeping shipping channels open and mitigating spring flooding.

Debris Booms

Debris buildup can cause costly power generation losses due to blockage of the intakes. Debris booms form a barrier to retain this debris, resulting in improved power generation performance.

Security Booms

Security booms create a highly visible barrier to warn boaters of dangerous waters, and to prevent access to restricted areas. They can be designed for year-round deployment even when interaction with ice and other harsh environmental conditions are present.
